Registration Open: Understanding Israel with Professor Nancy Koppelman Tuesdays at 7:00, starting in January Online
Israel is the only state in the world with a majority Jewish population, yet there is much we may not know about its complicated history and present-day challenges. Join Professor Nancy Koppelman as she leads us toward a better understanding of Israel and its history, culture, and relationship with its neighbors and with Jews around the world.
This six-part virtual series will be taught by TBH Member Professor Nancy Koppelman (The Evergreen State College). The class will be moderated by Rabbi Goldstein and will include opportunities for questions and discussion. This program is free to TBH members!
Meal Ordering Open! January Salon@Home Friday, January 13, 6:00 pm
Our speaker this month will be Anson Laytner, on the Kaifeng Jewish Community. The Kaifeng Jewish community is over a thousand years old, making it one of the longest-lived Jewish communities still in existence (but just barely). This talk will review the community's history and unique culture, and particularly how it came to be known in the rest of the world.
A focus will be on its difficult present-day situation. Aside from their fascinating history, the Chinese Jews raise a number of challenges for other Jews including "Who is a Jew?" and the legitimacy of, and limits to, cultural appropriation.
Meals will be available for pick up at TBH prior to services and the presentation. Orders are due by Tuesday, January 10th at 11:59 pm.

Here's a quick update on progress on the courtyard/parking lot project.
The good news is that we have gotten approval of our plans from the city! City staff required no significant changes that limited our parking layout or our courtyard designs in any way. When we are ready to go, we need to identify our construction team to the city and pay their permit fees.
We are now working to come to terms with a contractor, finalizing costs, and identifying the level of fundraising and phasing we will need to pursue to get the project underway. The best estimate for timing now is a construction window for phase one starting in the winter of 2023 and completed by the end of Spring.
If you have any questions, as always, please feel free to contact either Daniel Farber or Gary Schneider.
