August Salon@Home: Daniel Farber Friday, August 14, 6:00 pm
Dinner pick-up instructions will be sent out tomorrow to those who have placed an order! While we can not be physically together, we can still share in food and conversation at the TBH Shabbat Salon.
Erev Shabbat services will be at 6:00 pm, after which we can eat together and hear from our featured presenter, Daniel Farber. Our speaker begins at 7:00 pm. Daniel will be presenting, "Kukutali: Creation of the Nation's first - and only - Co-Managed State Park and Indian Tribal Preserve."
When long-time TBH member Daniel Farber retired last year, he volunteered in Jerusalem for three months for Bimkom https://bimkom.org/eng/home-mobile/, an Israeli land use planning non-profit organization. Bimkom specialized in advocating for the planning rights of mostly disenfranchised groups in Israel, including Beduins, Palestinians, Druse and the poor.
Daniel did not initially see a relevant comparative example of land use planning and management in the United States between differing cultures and legal structures. Then he remembered a highly unusual - and for now successful - model between two very different governments. The recently established Kukutali Preserve in Skagit County is the nation's first and so far only co-managed State Park and Indian Tribal Preserve.
To his Israeli hosts, he proposed a case study example of how governments can work together. Bimkom found value in exploring the similarities and differences between its efforts in Israel and State Parks' and the Swinomish Tribe's efforts here in Washington.
In this month's salon, Daniel will make that same presentation to those virtually gathered in Olympia as he made to Bimkom in Israel. He will then open the floor for questions and comments.
How can radically different cultures and institutions work together for a common good? What are the pitfalls of interagency and intergovernmental work? What are the strategies that can overcome those difficulties? And what personal behaviors and values best advance public interests? And for TBH relevance, how do Jewish values play into these questions? Let's explore the opportunities and limitations of co-management as a way to get good work done.
One program that TBH will be participating in for the month of Elul is The Shofar Project from the Institute for Jewish Spirituality. This will be a weekly gathering centered on themes of mindfulness, awakening and renewal. Read more at https://www.jewishspirituality.org/go-deeper/the-shofar-project/.
Traditionally Elul is a month of spiritual preparation for the work of reflection and repentance. We will have a series of live (on zoom) and pre-recorded teachings and workshops, ranging from prayer and song to cooking to crafts to spiritual discussion.
Check your inbox and weekly email for upcoming programming to celebrate the month of Elul in preparation for the High Holidays at TBH!
