The Talmud is an ancient compendium of Jewish law and lore, and provides the basis upon which biblical interpretation and contemporary Jewish practice rests. Hardly a monolithic document, the Talmud contains investigation and argumentation on all the facets of life. No background required!
Old and New- a journey of loss and hope Reading and chanting Rabbi David Seidenberg’s translation of Lamentations and special chant to awaken Mashiach Sitting on floor with candlelight recommended
So, what is your relationship to Tisha B’Av? Is there relevance to mourning the destruction of Jerusalem 2600 years ago? Can collective grieving of racial injustice, economic injustice, climate injustice, play a role in healing? Can collective yearning for justice nudge Mashiach to get the show on the road? Whatever your theology on it, as activist and author Courtney Martin says,
This section of the weekly is dedicated to sharing member creativity and experiences during this time of separation! If you have a recipe, piece of art, poem, short story, photo, etc. that you would like to share, send it to tbh@bethhatfiloh.org. If we receive enough submissions, we hope to compile them after this crisis has passed.
these acrobatic sugar snap peas
last year i made a big deal out of the cherry tomato plant summer mornings, i’d sit on the back porch next to it aspiring to learn its secret style of meditation, the secrets of its languid unfurling flavors
but this year - right up against the porch i planted sugar snap peas - planted them close in - so i could easily run brown twine from their support scaffolding - up to the nails i hammered - jutting from the porch roof then weaving a cat’s cradle style - high wire acrobatic trellis
the thermometer-shaped stake that came with the starter plants optimistically declares: disease resistant, high yields, with plump sweet pods 64 days - sun!
and sure enough, after bowing to the crowd, soon they started climbing up the acrobatic trellis with the greatest of ease - these daring young peas on their flying brown twine trapeze!
climbing despite covid, despite my haphazard watering - most sequestered mornings i sit next to them slurping my coffee and pretending to meditate but actually studying the death defying peas as they vine their way skyward
their tendrils - like the points of a court jester’s shoes - curl and reach into thin air, reach and grab onto bars of twine or adjacent stem each teensy-weensy white flower transforms into a crown cap for the pea-body that descends from it, that it gives birth to
their leaves look like open green hearts like butterflies from some nearby green planet leaf/butterflies that flap open to gather the light from our ever-so-generous sun
and ok, there is the sound! when after those 64 days pass and you crack a pod open - they snap like a beatnik’s fingers at a groovy poetry reading snap like the twig under your forested shoe
while aware of, but not overly invested in, the ample amounts of fiber, protein, vitamins a, c, and k that they pack one must testify to their taste!
as their moisture is released first there’s the sweet green mist followed by the satisfying succulent fibrous green crunch as if toothed from the very arc of a glorious vegan rainbow…
ah summer, ah covid - may i too aspire to climb towards heaven to climb and to nourish others, to nourish strangers may i fervently follow the path of these tenacious teachers -
these acrobatic and holy - delicious sugar snap peas
