Shabbat Salon: Maia Brown
Friday, May 10, 2024 • 2 Iyar 5784
7:00 PM - 9:00 PMOur May presenter will be Maia Brown, presenting Measuring Mourning: A Ritual for Loss. This participatory presentation explores a recently-resurfaced Ashkenazi women’s tradition of feldmestn—the practice of measuring ancestors’ burial places with candlewick, later burnt for the living and the dead.
How can this two-century-old Eastern European Jewish tradition help us grapple with contemporary catastrophes, as well as old displacements, genocides, and assimilation? When we do not know where our people are buried, what do we measure? Brown will share some of her own art practice and conclude with an open-ended maker space. Participants will have an opportunity to work with materials, including wick, to measure and reflect.
Maia Brown (she/her) is a visual artist, Yiddish musician, writer, translator, and educator. Brown has a background in oral history and fine art, including a Watson Fellowship to study storytelling and advocacy in South Africa and the North of Ireland. A candidate for a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College, she is a dedicated student and teacher of her own tradition as well as the many ways people have reached out to each other across communities.
ABOUT OUR SHABBAT SALON
Our Shabbat Salons this year will not include a full service in the Sanctuary. Rather, we will join in-person in community to celebrate Shabbat in the social hall with several prayers before we enjoy a catered vegetarian dinner by Nineveh. The presentation begins between 7:30 and 7:45 pm, and the event typically concludes at 9:00 pm. Each menu is specially created just for TBH!
MENU:
- Cabbage and carrot slaw with oregano vinaigrette
- Veggie Pozole
- Potato tostadas with chipotle creama
- House made corn tortilla chips with Salsa and Guacamole
- Black bean and sweet potato enchiladas.
- Tres leches cake
Dinner is $18 per person. RSVP is required for the dinner only. You may join us for the presentation without an RSVP.
