Shabbat Salon: Dontae Payne

Friday, January 12, 2024 2 Sh'vat 5784

6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Our January presenter will be our new Mayor of Olympia, Dontae Payne. He will be presenting on his experience in public service sitting on the Olympia City Council and his experience as a Jew of Color in our community.

Dontae Payne was elected to Olympia City Council Position #6 in November 2021 and will start begins his term as Mayor in January 2024. He is the first Black (African) American man to serve on the Olympia City Council and our first Black mayor.

Raised in Philadelphia by a single mother and with two younger brothers, Payne and his siblings were raised with an understanding of service and to reach back and bring others along whenever possible. He sees this as a collective responsibility for each generation and he believes we can find ways to help others no matter our status or position, and that doing so makes us a better community.

Payne and his family moved to Olympia when he was assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord during his service in the U.S. Army. He completed two combat tours in Afghanistan in his first four years of enlistment. He earned a Master of Public Administration degree and Bachelor of Arts degree from The Evergreen State College following his military service.

ABOUT OUR SHABBAT SALON

Our Shabbat Salons this year will not include a full service in the Sanctuary. Rather, we will join in-person in community to celebrate Shabbat in the social hall with several prayers before we enjoy a catered vegetarian dinner by Nineveh.  The presentation begins between 7:30 and 7:45 pm, and the event typically concludes at 9:00 pm. Each menu is specially created just for TBH!

Our January dinner will feature a VEGETARIAN YAKISOBA AND SUSHI ASSORTMENT!

Dinner is $18 per person. RSVP is required for the dinner only. You may join us for the presentation without an RSVP.
