Shabbat Salon: Deke Moulton

Friday, March 8, 2024 28 Adar I 5784

6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Our March presenter will be author Deke Moulton.

Deke Moulton (she/they) is an Olympia-based author of the Sydney Taylor Book Award Honor award-winning DON'T WANT TO BE YOUR MONSTER, for ages 10-14, which takes the common vampire myth and turns it into a parable on how it feels to be Jewish in the world today. She is retired army, having done such various jobs in the military as Arabic linguist and Drill Sergeant during her time in service.

Have you noticed a parallel beween the infamous blood libel and blood-sucking vampires? Wonder why witches are depicted with big noses? And why are gremlins obsessed with money? If you guessed antisemitism, you'd be correct! Come listen to Deke Moulton lecture on the antisemitic roots to many of our favorite monsters, and discover ways in which deconstructing of those myths are happening today.

ABOUT OUR SHABBAT SALON

Our Shabbat Salons this year will not include a full service in the Sanctuary. Rather, we will join in-person in community to celebrate Shabbat in the social hall with several prayers before we enjoy a catered vegetarian dinner by Nineveh.  The presentation begins between 7:30 and 7:45 pm, and the event typically concludes at 9:00 pm. Each menu is specially created just for TBH!

Our dinner menu:

  • Green salad with balsamic vinaigrette
  • Caprese: fresh mozzarella with tomato and basil
  • Vegetable lasagna
  • Tomato garlic bruschetta
  • Sauteed zucchini with garlic
  • Fagioli all'uccelletto: cannellini beans cooked in a tomato sauce with garlic, fresh sage, and extra virgin olive oil
  • Tiramisu

Dinner is $18 per person. RSVP is required for the dinner only. You may join us for the presentation without an RSVP.
