Shabbat Salon: Rabbi Deborah Waxman

Friday, September 13, 2024 10 Elul 5784

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

To kick off salons for the 5785 year, we welcome Rabbi Deborah Waxman, president of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and CEO of Reconstructing Judaism.

THE FIRST WOMAN RABBI to head a Jewish congregational union and a Jewish seminary, Rabbi Deborah Waxman, Ph.D., became president and chief executive officer of Reconstructing Judaism in 2014. Since then, she has drawn on her training as a rabbi and historian to be the Reconstructionist movement's leading voice in the public square.

Under Waxman's leadership, Reconstructing Judaism has undertaken major initiatives while building ever stronger relationships with affiliated congregations and innovating Judaism. During her tenure, the organization has reimagined its rabbinical training curriculum, hosted the largest convention in the movement's history, and launched Evolve, an online project modeling nuanced discussion of substantive Jewish topics and incubating ideas to positively transform Jewish life. Waxman is creator and host of Hashivenu, a podcast about resilience and Judaism.

Waxman has taught at the rabbinical college since 2002, where she is the Aaron and Marjorie Ziegelman Presidential professor. Her writing has appeared in the Forward, The Times of Israel, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Jewish Telegraphic Agency and other news outlets, and she has published several academic papers.

Waxman is a cum laude graduate of Columbia College, Columbia University, and graduated from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. She earned a Ph.D. in American Jewish history from Temple University.
