Jake Shulman-Ment returns to Olympia with Abigale Reisman and tsimbalist Pete Rushefsky, two of the most highly regarded klezmer performers of their generation. They combine forces to present a virtuosic and energetic journey through raucous dance tunes, meditative listening music, original compositions, and new settings of Yiddish poetry. Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience this special collaboration celebrating the rich heritage of Jewish musical culture!

Bios:

Jake Shulman-Ment is “considered one of the finest klezmer fiddlers on the planet” (Jon Kalish, NPR). He tours and records internationally, was featured in Csaba Bereczki's full-length documentary film Soul Exodus, and performed on screen in HBO's Succession and Martin Scorcese's The Irishman. Jake collected, studied, performed, and documented traditional music in Romania as a Fulbright scholar, and has lived and traveled in Hungary and Greece, learning traditional violin styles.

Abigale Reisman is an expressive and thoughtful fidl player and is particularly interested in creating a vocal sound through the violin and connecting her playing to the rhythms and accents of the Yiddish language. Abigale is a performer, composer, and arranger and has been a faculty member at various Yiddish and Klezmer programs. She is the Music Director at Temple Ahavat Achim.

Pete Rushefsky is a leading performer, composer and teacher of the tsimbl (cimbalom), the traditional hammered dulcimer of klezmer music. He serves as executive director of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance which has worked to preserve and present immigrant performing arts traditions in New York City since 1968. He has performed internationally at major venues and festivals. He has concertized and recorded with classical violinist Itzhak Perlman and with many of Jewish music’s leading performers.
