With his gestures and facial expressions alone, the mime Marcel Marceau captured audiences around the globe for decades. But the tragic background behind his work has remained hidden for a long time. The Art of Silence sheds new light on his life and unique art form, which his family and companions keep alive to this day.
Dir: Maurizius Staerkle Drux / 2022 / French, English, German / 82 min
The Seattle Jewish Film Festival is a cornerstone program of the Stroum Jewish Community Center’s Arts + Ideas Program and fulfills SJCC’s community-building mission of amplifying profound Jewish experiences for everyone and all generations. SJFF is “cinemanna” for film-lovers: a cinematic feast for the eyes and, like manna from heaven, a surprise gift of sustenance for the soul and the community.
We have selected two of the “Best of Fest” films from our 28th annual festival that best illustrate the power of cinema and “cinemanna,” and in particular the artistry of filmmaking about Holocaust subjects, one a French documentary, one a French feature film and our 2023 Audience Award Winner for Best Film. THE ART OF SILENCE is a revelatory documentary about the famous mime artist, Marcel Marceau, “unmasking” his enigmatic personal and family history in an artistically moving way. FAREWELL, MR. HAFFMANN is a transfixing drama that has garnered accolades on the festival circuit, including the Aspen Film Festival jury prize, the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival grand prize, and our own SJFF 2023 Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.
