When a Jewish child reaches the age of 13, he or she becomes an adult in the Jewish community, taking on all the rights and responsibilities which that entails. At TBH, we mark this rite of passage through community celebration. In the year before becoming a bar or bat mitzvah (“son or daughter of the commandments”) the student undertakes a specialized course of study in which he or she learns to read from the Torah and interpret its meaning. The student also undertakes a community service project to demonstrate his or her understanding of the Jewish values of tzedakah. |
